We’re excited to share that Le Nichoir’s new Aquatic Bird Aviary is moving forward! Planning for this aviary began in 2025 to replace an aged structure, built in 2011. Originally part of the OARS project, the new Aquatic Bird Aviary plan has evolved into a more sustainable design to meet our longer-term needs. It will allow us to care for more birds and provide proper housing for those already in our care.

What will the new aviary be like?

It will be our first year-round outdoor aviary, specifically designed to provide freshwater accommodation for the aquatic birds we serve here in Canada. These are features that have never been offered before in our type of climate, which has been the biggest hurdle, adding expense and time to the design process. To ensure the aviary is safe and fully meets the needs of our patients, we have consulted with experts from zoos and rehabilitation centers, pool and aquaculture companies, and pond specialists, while conducting extensive research throughout the planning process.

Other features include:

  • Spaces designed for both diving and dabbling birds
  • Rubber curtains to allow for subdivided areas
  • Two diving pools with a recycling water system that removes surface contaminants
  • Heated flooring for energy-efficient climate control
  • Rubber-mat flooring to protect avian feet and offer proper drainage
  • Partial roof to allow natural light 
  • Storage and counter space for food preparation

OARS stands for Oil Spill Avian Response System.

It was conceived by Le Nichoir after years of treating and rehabilitating oiled birds from accidental spills across Quebec.

OARS was delivered in August 2025 in conjunction with California-based International Bird Rescue, the world leader in this field, to create a network of 40 professionals across Quebec trained in safely treating oiled birds.

The Government of Canada, through the Environmental Damages Fund, is providing up to $117,700 in support of OARS. Originally budgeted at $230,000 in 2023, the budget has been revised to $250,000 to account for inflation. Le Nichoir has raised an additional $90,700 in donations and pro bono services. Another $41,600 is still to be raised.
