Cet \u00e9t\u00e9, un jeune plongeon huard d\u2019un lac des Laurentides, abandonn\u00e9 par ses parents, a caus\u00e9 de vives inqui\u00e9tudes aux r\u00e9sidents locaux. L\u2019un d\u2019eux nous a appel\u00e9 pour nous dire que, depuis le printemps, ils observaient avec attention une famille de plongeons et leurs deux poussins sur le lac. \u00c0 quatre semaines, l\u2019un des jeunes \u00e9tait visiblement plus petit que l\u2019autre, et par deux fois il avait \u00e9t\u00e9 trouv\u00e9 seul, loin de sa famille. Apr\u00e8s avoir de nouveau r\u00e9uni le jeune plongeon \u00e0 ses parents, cette personne inqui\u00e8te nous demandait conseil. Il fut d\u00e9cid\u00e9 que s\u2019il \u00e9tait retrouv\u00e9 seul une autre fois, il faudrait nous l\u2019apporter. Un jour plus tard il \u00e9tait \u00e0 notre porte. L\u2019abandon du jeune plongeon \u00e9tait probablement d\u00fb \u00e0 sa petite taille, ou \u00e0 une autre anomalie d\u00e9tect\u00e9e par ses parents.<\/p>\n

Le jeune plongeon fut examin\u00e9, il paraissait en bonne sant\u00e9 mais son plumage ne semblait pas enti\u00e8rement imperm\u00e9able. Les plongeons passent toute leur vie sur l\u2019eau et leur plumage doit toujours \u00eatre totalement imperm\u00e9able pour \u00e9viter l\u2019hypothermie. Pendant des semaines, il fut soumis en alternance \u00e0 des sessions dans un bassin suivies de sessions de s\u00e9chage, afin de recouvrer son imperm\u00e9abilit\u00e9. Lorsqu\u2019il \u00e9tait hors de l\u2019eau, nous faisions tr\u00e8s attention \u00e0 ce que le substrat reste propre, doux et coussin\u00e9 gr\u00e2ce \u00e0 de la mousse \u00e0 m\u00e9moire de forme et \u00e0 plusieurs \u00e9paisseurs de tissu polaire. Leur corps \u00e9tant fait pour flotter, les plongeons huards sont extr\u00eamement sensibles aux blessures par pression.<\/p>\n

Gr\u00e2ce a nos soins le jeune plongeon a rapidement grandi, passant de 420 g \u00e0 son arriv\u00e9e \u00e0 plus de 2 kilos. De petite taille, il ne s\u2019en est pas moins montr\u00e9 vorace, engouffrant 600 g de poisson par jour, pr\u00e8s de 40 % de son poids ! Il a r\u00e9cemment \u00e9t\u00e9 remis en libert\u00e9 dans une r\u00e9gion o\u00f9 des plongeons huards non territoriaux sont pr\u00e9sents.<\/p>\n
