Le Nichoir admitted 113 young Ring-billed gulls beginning on Wednesday June 5th and coming from colonies located on industrial rooftops around Montreal. These gulls were likely victims of the record high temperatures we have been experiencing the last week. In an attempt to escape the heat, the gulls jumped off the rooftops. Sadly, many did not survive the fall but those that did were captured and brought to Le Nichoir for care.
Both Le Nichoir and the Montreal SPCA worked closely together to monitor the situation until the weather returned to normal temperatures.
Receiving an influx of many patients at one time creates its own struggles, but our volunteers and staff were up to the challenge. The gulls are currently thriving at Le Nichoir being fed a diet of fish and other foods, enjoying outdoor pools and maturing in preparation for release, which should be within 5 weeks.
