Birds Canada in partnership with Environment and Climate Change Canada recently released “The State of Canada’s Birds”, a must-read well done publication focused on the current status of our wild bird populations. This study highlights the critical need to address population declines occurring among our aerial insectivores, grassland birds and long-distance migrants. All species that Le Nichoir commonly cares for.
The good news is that current conservation efforts being made have resulted in populations of waterfowl, wetland birds and birds of prey increasing. A sign of hope for other species, and that our efforts can result in positive change.
The holiday season is a good time to reflect on these issues and the plight facing wild birds – a chance to think about the choices that we made in the past year and reconfirm what is important to us. For Le Nichoir’s team, this involves thinking of all the bird patients that came through our doors, the efforts that we made to save them, and what we can do next year to improve our successes.
Supporting wild bird conservation can be as simple as supporting Le Nichoir and one of our fundraisers. Le Nichoir’s Bird-Friendly Coffee can go a long way in supporting long distance migrants in their winter habitat.
Here are a few other ways that you can support Le Nichoir this holiday season:
1) Give Flowers for Feathers. This includes four beautiful locally grown potted flowers (between December and May) offered for pick-up at Le Nichoir or in Kirkland. 2) Give a sponsorship for a winter bird in celebration of the season! This year’s choice is the Dark-eyed Junco, a winter bird that can commonly be seen at your feeder! At $50 and tax deductible, the Holiday Sponsorship is an affordable gift for any bird or nature lover. The package includes a personalized certificate and information collectible card, a Le Nichoir site tour, as well as a Le Nichoir magnet and a limited-edition ornament. 3) Shop for more gifts at La Boutique du Nichoir from birding accessories, bird seed, nature themed gifts, children’s games, Bird-Friendly coffee and more. Many new products arrived in the store this year! The shop is open Monday to Sunday 9am to 5pm. and much of our merchandise is also sold online here.
