Each spring, Ruby-throated hummingbirds return to Quebec after a long and exhausting migration from Central America. With a few simple steps, you can turn your garden into a welcoming haven for them.

1. Plant Native Flowers

Hummingbirds are naturally drawn to nectar-rich flowers, especially those in bright red, orange, and pink hues.

2. Put Up a Feeder

Use a simple sugar-water solution: mix 1 part white sugar to 4 parts water. Never use honey, brown sugar, or food coloring, as these can harm the birds.  Clean your feeder every few days—more often in hot weather—to prevent mold and fermentation. 3. Provide Shelter and Perches

These tiny birds often perch between feeding to conserve energy.  Shrubs, small trees, and vines can provide both shelter and perch sites.

4. Avoid Pesticides

Even small amounts of pesticides can harm hummingbirds directly or reduce the insects they eat.
