Last fall, Le Nichoir proudly launched OARS (Oil-spill Avian Response System), a project designed to create a network of 40 professionals across Quebec trained in the safe treatment of wild birds exposed to oil spills.

In August, International Bird Rescue (IBR) visited Le Nichoir to deliver two specialized training sessions: Oil Spills and Avian Fauna, which explored how oil affects bird physiology to improve treatment outcomes, and Washing of Oiled Avian Fauna, a hands-on practical session.

The training were a resounding success and provided a valuable opportunity for our team to collaborate with other professionals across the province who may one day respond to an oil spill. Participants were highly engaged and enthusiastic, while Michelle and Barbara from IBR shared a wealth of knowledge and expertise. It was heartwarming to see so many smiles, eagerness to learn, and enthusiasm for networking.

These sessions have opened doors to new partnerships and equipped Le Nichoir with the tools and skills needed to respond effectively should we ever be called upon in an oil spill event.

The next phase of OARS will be the construction of an aquatic bird aviary. Our dedicated committee is hard at work, with plans to begin construction in 2026. Stay tuned for more updates!

This project was undertaken with the financial support of the Government of Canada through the Environmental Damages Fund, which is providing up to $117,700 in funding towards OARS.
