Almost any hummingbird feeder will work if it’s kept clean and filled with fresh nectar, but choosing the right feeder can make it easier to attract hummingbirds and keep them healthy.

Here are a few tips to help you choose the right one:

  • Choose red. Hummingbirds are attracted to red feeders. Avoid yellow feeding ports, which tend to attract bees and wasps. Never add red dye to nectar—simply mix 1 part white sugar with 4 parts water.
  • Keep it simple. Choose a feeder that’s easy to take apart and clean. Smaller feeders are often best because the nectar is replaced more frequently.
Pick a good location. Hang the feeder in partial shade, about 4–6 feet (1.2–1.8 m) above the ground, near flowers if possible. If you have multiple feeders, space them apart to reduce competition.
  • Clean it often. Replace the nectar every 2–3 days in warm weather (daily during heat waves), even if the feeder isn’t empty.
  • Discourage pests. An ant moat can help keep ants away. If bees or wasps become a problem, move the feeder a few feet to a new location.
