There are crows and other birds that sing early in the morning and make a lot of noise. Can someone come and kill them, or relocate them?
It’s understandable to feel frustrated when birds like crows are especially noisy early in the morning. However, it’s important to know that most native bird species in Canada—including crows—are protected under the federal Migratory Birds Convention Act. This means it is illegal to harm, kill, or relocate them without special permits.
Most wild birds, and other wildlife, have little place left to call home. It is important that we find ways to coexist with wildlife, as they have as much right to be somewhere as we do.
Still, there are some ways you can try to humanely deter birds including:
Reduce Attractants: Remove outdoor food sources like open compost or garbage, and cover bird feeders at night.
Use Deterrents: Try reflective tape, or fake predators like an owl decoy but rotate them regularly so birds don’t get used to them and
Adjust Sleep Environment: Use blackout curtains or white noise machines to reduce early morning disturbances.
There are pigeons trying to nest on my balcony. What can I do to deter them?
Pigeons nesting on balconies is a common problem especially in cities like Montreal and once they establish a nest, they’re very persistent. Here’s how you can stop them effectively and humanely:
Prevent Pigeons From Nesting:
1) Remove nesting material immediately. If there are twigs, feathers, or droppings, clean them up as soon as you see them. Wear gloves and a mask as pigeon droppings can carry diseases like histoplasmosis.
2) Block access to favorite spots. Bird netting is highly effective for blocking off balconies, railings, or alcoves. You can install anti-roosting spikes on ledges or air conditioners. These don’t harm birds but make landing uncomfortable. Another option is to attach a slippery or angled surface (like plastic sheeting or metal flashing) so they can’t land or nest.
3) Use visual or motion deterrents. Shiny objects: Hang reflective tape, old CDs, or aluminum foil strips. Movement and reflections deter birds. Predator decoys: Fake owls or hawks may help but you need to move them regularly so pigeons don’t realize they’re fake. Motion-activated deterrents: These emit sound or spray water if your balcony allows it.
4) Remove food sources. Never feed birds on your balcony. Ensure there’s no food, crumbs, or standing water nearby. Remove your pet’s food when they are not on the balcony.
I work at a restaurant and the wild birds are always on the terrasse. What should we do?
Unfortunately, there is not very much you can do about this as some wild birds use terrasses as shelter and a food source. It is important that the terrasse remain clean of any food litter, as this is the major reason why the birds will be attracted to the area.
You can try installing streamers, or anything that might move and scare them. These tactics can work for a short period of time, but the best solution is to keep the terrasse clean. You can gently remind your customers not to feed the birds.
