The holidays are fast approaching – joyful and busy times for us all. At Le Nichoir, our staff and volunteers are extra busy, focused on raising funds needed for our educational programs and to care for the thousands of wild birds we expect to treat in 2024. Thankfully, most migratory birds have already headed south so the clinic is relatively quiet.

But there are always exceptions! Take the Belted Kingfisher admitted recently. It’s a species that can be difficult to care for, with a high level of stress and other special requirements. In this case, we decorated an aviary with appropriate branches for its two fused toes — a unique kingfisher characteristic to perch on. We also added a pool stocked with a diet of freshwater fish for diving practice. This is one of the more interesting examples of the thousands of cases we manage every year.

There are different ways that you can support our work at this time of year, here are a few:

  1. Contribute directly to the Annual Campaign, our largest campaign and a major funding initiative. All donations are tax deductible and go directly to fund operations. Donate here.
  2. Give Flowers for Feathers. This includes five beautiful locally grown potted flowers (one per month from December to May) offered for pick-up at Le Nichoir or on the West Island. The cost is $160 including a $100 tax receipt. Our December flower is a poinsettia! For more information contact Alex at
  3. Give sponsorship of a winter bird in celebration of the Season! This year’s choice is the Bohemian Waxwing with its unique red waxy wingtips and beautiful yellow/orange tipped tail. At $45 and tax deductible, the Holiday Sponsorship is an affordable gift for any bird or nature lover. The package includes a personalized certificate and collectible card, a Le Nichoir site tour, as well as a Le Nichoir magnet and a limited-edition ornament.
