Having a hoot at Le Nichoir’s Open House

Open House 2013The weather gods blessed us with sunshine on this fun-filled day, giving a carnival-like atmosphere to the Centre’s annual Open House on July 13. The over 400 people who attended the event could be seen enjoying the hands-on learning experiences that Le Nichoir and our wonderful exhibitors provided, making that all-important connection with nature.

The crafts and face-painting stations remained bustling throughout the day – the chairs were never empty. The volunteers may have been painting angry birds but there were certainly plenty of butterflies and happy faces too. I even saw a few grown-ups getting their faces painted!

Christopher Cloutier of the Morgan Arboretum led a parade of excited children and adults — binoculars and cameras in tow — on two successful bird walks. We were also very lucky to have local Hudson artist and author, Catherine McNamee, reading from her wonderful children’s books. [Read more…]

Barn is set for seasonal opening May 16

Le NichoirWith spring in the air, staff and volunteers at Le Nichoir are getting ready to jump into another busy baby bird season. Work is underway to prepare the Barn and welcome both patients and visitors. Already, there’s a sense of great excitement and anticipation for an eventful spring and summer. Once the Barn’s doors swing wide open on May 16th, the Centre will remain operational seven days a week until mid-September.

Even though the period between May and July is traditionally our busiest and the Barn stays dormant all winter, Le Nichoir welcomes birds with open arms, and at all times of the year. This past winter, the Centre was kept busy and on its feet, caring for injured birds and responding to phone calls on a regular basis. Le Nichoir received on average one bird a day until the end of November, and then continued to admit birds until January. We assume the increase in admission is the result of a multitude of factors, such as the changing weather patterns, birds delaying their migration in the fall, and the recent increase in visibility of the organization. Grand Défi Québec Oiseaux – Team Le Nichoir

Grand Défi Québec OiseauxLe Nichoir is proud to announce that this year we will be participating in the third edition of the Grand Défi Québec Oiseaux. Organized by the Regroupement Québec Oiseaux, the Défi consists in observing as many bird species as possible over a 24 hour period from a fixed location. This year, the Défi will take place from 6.pm. May 10th to 6 p.m. May 11th.

Four volunteers from Le Nichoir, armed with binoculars and field guides, are challenging themselves to observe 40 different species of bird in a small marsh behind Finnegan’s market in Hudson.

You can support any team member and Le Nichoir by donating a finite amount or add to the challenge and donate an amount per species observed. If you wish to support us follow this link:

or, go to the Grand Défi Québec Oiseaux website and support the team named ‘’Le Nichoir’’.

The Défi is a friendly competition between birders but also a fundraiser to support ornithology groups and bird conservation throughout the province. Half of the money raised by the teams will go to the Regroupement Québec Oiseaux conservation projects. The other half goes to an ornithology group or an organization chosen by the team; in our case, Le Nichoir.

Results: Of the 45 teams participating Le Nichoir ranked 21st in number of species observed – 46 and 9th in money raised – $909
