How do I transport a bird?

The safest way to transport most birds is in cardboard boxes with small holes. Do not use any tape or anything sticky to seal the box. Line the box with a towel (with no threads so that birds do not become entangled). Do not give the bird water or food. This increases their chance of injury, soiling their feathers, and becoming hypothermic. Transport the bird inside the car (not in the trunk) in a temperature regulated environment, never in front of an air vent. Make sure that speaking is at a minimum and that the radio is turned off. Never leave a bird unattended in a vehicle  and do not smoke.

How do I capture a large bird?

The safety of the bird and your safety are very important when considering whether to capture a bird. Some species of wild  birds can be dangerous to capture, and the proper personal protective equipment (PPE) must be used. This can include gloves, face shields, etc.

Always have  a large box or a carrier lined with a towel  ready before you try to capture the bird.

A medium to large sized bird can be caught using a fishing net or large blanket. Remember when grabbing the bird to be careful of being bitten,  and to protect your face. Some species of birds, such as loons, gulls and herons have long necks. Their neck needs to be restrained immediately upon capture. Please call Le Nichoir for detailed instructions 450-458-2809

How do I capture a small bird

Smaller birds can be captured with butterfly nets or small towels. Even gently placing a laundry basket over the bird can work.

Always have a  box or a carrier lined with a towel ready  before you try to capture the bird.

If capturing with a net be careful when removing the bird as it can become entangled. Once the bird is immobilized, put it in a cardboard box, or cat/dog carrier. If a carrier is used be sure to cover the metal door from the inside with a towel to reduce the risks of injuries. This is especially important with smaller birds who can get their head stuck.

How do I handle a bird?

The best way to handle a medium to large sized bird is by wrapping its body in a towel and holding it firmly like a football. Be cautious, because pressing too firmly can compress the bird’s air sacs and restrict its breathing. Place the bird in a box or carrier.

For smaller birds, place their head between your index and middle finger (the bander’s grip). Gently place your remaining fingers over the bird’s body to protect its wings. It is important that the bird cannot flap its wings, as this could cause injury. Place the bird in a box.
