The Belted Kingfisher is a unique bird that doesn’t get a lot of attention due to its solitary behaviour, and need for aquatic habitats. Luckily, the Kingfisher is now getting lots of attention! As part of the Bird Friendly City program, the Belted Kingfisher was chosen as the Town of Hudson’s bird!
Kingfishers can commonly be found along the Ottawa River in Hudson hunting for fish, or perching along the shoreline. Not a common patient at Le Nichoir, individuals are often admitted due to collision injuries, especially from windows. While in care, they require pools with perching, a variety of fish and regular observation to ensure that they can hunt, and have the appropriate perches to accommodate their syndactyly feet (two of the toes are fused together).
