This year we also cared for 9 duckling Common and Hooded mergansers who stole our hearts watching them swim in the outdoor pools, eating insects and fish and huddling together in a makeshift “cavity”. The Common mergansers were found nesting in a church attic. All were recently released, with all ducklings and precocial chicks having a 90% release rate.
