We are excited to report the latest progress on Le Nichoir’s Oil Spill Avian Response System (OARS)! Thanks to the generosity of our supporters, we are about to make a significant contribution to  Quebec’s ability to respond effectively to oil spills that threaten wild birds. OARS is creating a network of trained professionals capable of providing expert care and rehabilitation when birds need it most.

Training Sessions
The first of three training sessions — in a bilingual, online, format led by Le Nichoir’s biologists—introduces participants to Quebec’s native aquatic birds. The session has been fully developed, and take-home kits and handouts are now being assembled.
In partnership with International Bird Rescue (IBR), a globally recognized leader in wildlife emergency response, we have finalized the content for the second and third training sessions. These in-person sessions will offer hands-on experience with the latest oiled wildlife rehabilitation techniques.

Building The Network
Recruitment is well underway! Participants from across the province—including emergency response professionals, wildlife health researchers, veterinary experts, biologists, and rehabilitation specialists—are joining forces to improve oil spill preparedness and response.

Aquatic Aviary Planning
Significant progress has been made in designing Quebec’s first dedicated aquatic aviary at Le Nichoir. We are working closely with an architect and engineering team to ensure this specialized facility meets the unique needs of aquatic birds, incorporating filtration pools that will aid in their recovery.

We are still working to secure the remaining $41,600 of the $250,000 needed to fully implement OARS. If you are interested in supporting OARS, we’d love to hear from you! Donations can also be made here.

Stay tuned for more updates as we continue to build a stronger, more effective emergency response network.

We gratefully acknowledge our donors, 25 anonymous donors and the foundations that have supported this project.
